ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the prevalence of burnout syndrome in residents of gynecology
and obstetrics in a tertiary hospital in the city of Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico.
Materials and Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional study, conducted from May
1 to 30, 2023 in residents of Gynecology and Obstetrics, in which the Maslach burnout
Inventory scale was used to evaluate this syndrome. Study parameters: age, sex, year
of residency, weekly working hours, monthly shifts, tasks, and personal exhaustion.
Frequencies, percentages, and central tendencies were calculated, and the χ
2 test was
used to compare and determine possible associations between variables.
Results: Thirty-five residents in obstetrics and gynecology (25 women and 10 men)
with a mean age of 32 ± 6 years were studied: 12 in their first year, 11 in their second
year, and 12 in their third year. A diagnosis of burnout syndrome was made in 16 of the
35 residents. No statistically significant differences were found in emotional exhaustion
or personal accomplishment (p › .05), although significant differences were found in
depersonalization (p ‹ .05); however, high levels of distress were reported in emotional
exhaustion (15 of 35) and in depersonalization (12 of 35), although 18 of 35 reported
adequate personal accomplishment.
Conclusions: The prevalence of burnout syndrome in the analyzed obstetriciangynecologists
was high, with affection mostly in the area of depersonalization and
emotional exhaustion.
