ABSTRACT
Reports on mortality after a fracture of the hip have shown varied results and there is no report of this kind on the mortality after a fracture of the hip treated at the ABC Medical Center. A retrospective, observational, longitudinal review of all patients treated at the ABC Medical Center for a fracture of the hip between January 1996 and January of 2001 was carried out. Two hundred and thirty four patients were reviewed (193 women and 41 men) the average age was 79.32 years. Mortality at one year after the fracture was found to be at 9.8% for the group treated surgically and 33.33% for the group treated non-surgically. These results were compared with the general population finding a significantly higher risk of death during the first year after the fracture. The risk of death was directly proportional to age and physical status, as evaluated by the ASA. Old age, male sex and a deteriorated physical status were all found to be independent risk factors for death after a fracture of the hip.
