Spiritual well-being and coping in palliative care oncology patients

ABSTRACT
Introduction: spirituality is fundamental part of identity in human and even more in patients experiencing a life-threatening illness or the end of life, impacting on the reduction of suffering, decision making and coping with the disease and situations they face, understanding this relationship opens the opportunity to understand how this, can impact the state of health and overall quality of life.
Objective: identify spiritual well-being and its relationship to coping styles in advanced cancer patients in palliative care.
Material and methods: a non-experimental, quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational, non-probabilistic, convenience sampling study was conducted. A total of 102 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of cancer attended at the Palliative Care Unit of the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología of Mexico; the instruments used were: Cancer Coping Scale and the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-Being (FACIT-Sp-12).
Results: frequency and descriptive analysis and Spearman correlations were performed. Moderate negative correlations were found between Spiritual Well-Being and the coping styles Anxious Preoccupation and Discouragement/Hopelessness (r = –0.525, p = 0.000 and r = –0.523, p = 0.000 respectively); in the FACIT-SP-12 subscales, moderate negative relationships were identified between Meaning and Discouragement/Hopelessness (r = –0.510, p = 0.000), and Peace with Anxious Preoccupation (r = –0.639, p = 0.000) and Discouragement/Hopelessness (r = –0.563, p = 0.000).
Conclusion: spiritual well-being can be considered a protective factor in coping in oncologic patients at palliative care, is essential psychological and spiritual interventions oriented to strengthen spiritual well-being in this type of patients.
