ABSTRACT
Introduction: frailty syndrome is a geriatric syndrome associated with adverse health outcomes such as hospitalization, institutionalization and death.
Objective: to identify and measure its severity in clinical practice for timely palliative care.
Material and methods: a sample of 99 older adults was prospectively studied, using semi-structured questionnaires, scales (Barthel, Lawton) and to detect frailty syndrome (FRAIL). The results were analyzed: descriptive, univariate, bivariate and nonparametric hypothesis tests of χ
2 and odd ratio; to determine the causal association, Spearman's correlation was used.
Results: 99 older people, 74% female and 26% male. The FRAIL scale determined that of the 99 patients, 35.4% had pre-frailty and 41.4% had frailty, with an increase in this syndrome in elderly people over 81 years of age, with a prevalence of 83%.
Conclusions: there is a high prevalence of frailty syndrome in elderly adults with statistically significant risk factors: female sex, widowed marital status, incomplete schooling, sensory deficit (mixed), polypharmacy. The Spearman correlation indicated significant associations with the degree of dependency.
