ABSTRACT
Introduction: The therapeutic strategy for high blood pressure should take into account cardiovascular risk, as well as blood pressure levels, to maximize the cost-effectiveness analysis in the treatment of the disease. Objective: To assess the therapeutic approach to high blood pressure according to cardiovascular risk in elderly people.
Method: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in 103 elderly patients who had high blood pressure at a family doctor's office from Santiago de Cuba. Some clinical variables (cardiovascular risk, therapeutic strategies, pharma-cological treatment, control criteria of high blood pressure) were studied and the comprehensive therapeutic approach was evaluated according to the Cuban guide for hypertension diagnosis, evaluation and treatment. Descriptive statistical tech-niques such as absolute frequency and percentages as well as measures of central tendency were used.
Results: Hypertensive elderly patients studied have a moderate to high risk of suffering cardiovascular events in the upcoming years. One hundred percent had combined pharmacological treatment. Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors were the most commonly used drugs (52.3%). A 32% of patients could be classified as controlled. The comprehensive therapeutic approach was inadequate in 51.5% of patients.
Conclusions: The results obtained in the current research show that the compre-hensive therapeutic approach to high blood pressure, according to cardiovascular risk, was inadequate. To properly apply the Cuban guide on this disease grantees better quality in medical attention to these patients.
