Bolton's index in adolescents with normal occlusion in Eastern Havana: 2020

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Bolton´s index is transcendental for diagnosing dental discrepancies and treating the present alterations.Objective: To describe the Bolton´s index in adolescents from East Havana with normal occlusion.
Material and method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out from January to March 2020, at Mario Escalona polyclinic, East Havana municipality, Havana Province, Cuba. The universe was constituted by 593 adolescents between 12 and 15 years from "26 de Julioʺ and" República Popular de Angolaʺ junior high shcools. The sample consisted of 25 teenagers with normal occlusion. The total and anterior Bolton´s index was determined. The results were presented in tables.
Results: The total Bolton index showed a mean of 91.33%; 90.54% in females and 92.52% in males. Nine adolescents (36.0%) were found with total dental discrepancy; five females (33.3%) and four males (40.0%). The upper teeth excess showed a mean of 3.66 ± 2mm and the lower one 3.15 ± 1.5mm. No anterior dental discrepancies were found in 48.0%, 53.3% in females and 40.0% in males. The means of the anterior index was 77.95%. Anteroinferior tooth excess was present in 76.9% of the cases with discrepancies.
Conclusions: Both total and anterior Bolton indexes coincided in their average with the author's standard. The total and anterior dental discrepancy was detected in a high percentage of cases. The male sex was the most affected and presented the highest means of the indexes. Anteroinferior tooth excess was the most found discrepancy.
