ABSTRACT
Introduction: Anorectal abscesses constitute a very common disease in surgical emergencies, presenting from a small, localized, easily diagnosed lesion, to a more complex and serious one. An adequate diagnosis and incision drainage and subsequent treatment decrease the possibility of its persistence as a chronic process or causing death. Objectives: To assess the behavior of this disease, as well as the result of surgical treatment.
Methods: An observational study of 118 patients diagnosed with anorectal abscess was carried out, in the period from March 2017 to July 2019 in the general hospital of Sabya, Saudi Arabia.
Results: Male patients (66.1%), the age group 21-30 (35.5%) and perianal abscess (75.4%) predominated. The most frequent associated diseases were obesity (22%) and diabetes mellitus (17.7%). In 65.3% of the patients incision and drainage was performed using local anesthesia in an outpatient procedure, and 34.7% were admitted. Escherichia coli was the most isolated germ (81.3%) and there was recurrence with the existence of an anal fistula in 14.4%; the rest of the patients were discharged without complications.
Conclusions: With the adequate diagnosis and treatment of anorectal abscesses, favorable results are obtained and the number of complications implying a new surgery is reduced.
