ABSTRACT
The study evaluated the dietary habits, physical activity, and family history of young people in southeastern
Mexico, considering the implications for their health during the COVID-19 quarantine. The
study was a cross-sectional study with a simple random sample. A total of 153 young between 15 and
35 years of age from southeastern Mexico were surveyed and responded to an online questionnaire, in
which information was obtained on the participants’ anthropometric measurements, general health
status (including symptoms of depression), dietary patterns, physical activity levels, and family
medical history concerning chronic diseases. The data were analyzed with descriptive and inferential
statistics, and the odds ratio was used for multivariate analysis adjusted by age, sex, and body
mass index (BMI). Obesity (41.9%) and depressive symptoms (24.2%) were the most frequent health
conditions in the participants. Bottled soft drinks during the meal were highly consumed by 10.5%.
Physical activity was not performed by 34.36% of the respondents. High BMI and consumption of
undesirable foods (NRF) during dinner and lunch increased the risk of obesity up to 8, 2.4, and 2.7
times, respectively. Obesity (2.3) and NRF consumption during dinner (7.6) and snacks (2.6) increase
the risk of depression. In conclusion, dietary habits had higher implications on young people’s health
in southeastern Mexico during the COVID-19 quarantine. Therefore, the results significantly contribute
to our understanding of the broader health repercussions of the pandemic and the necessary
measures to address them.
