ABSTRACT

Congenital heart diseases are the group of malformations with the highest mortality and morbidity. Prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart disease improves perinatal prognosis. The approach begins with an essential fetal echocardiography in each trimester of pregnancy, followed by an advanced evaluation with suspected anomalies or additional risk factors. This review aims to describe the main characteristics of essential fetal echocardiography, considering the current recommendations of the leading international organizations. Checklists and an algorithm for the initial diagnostic approach to congenital heart disease are included.
