ABSTRACT
Introduction: There is a renewed interest in medicinal plants, despite the large number of drugs and other therapeutic resources available. Among the plants, with wide use and publications, the Foeniculum vulgare Mill. (fennel) stands out, a fact that motivated us to carry out a review to try to collate the information available on the ethnomedical and pharmacological studies, both preclinical and clinical, found. Objective: To relate the reports of preclinical and clinical pharmacological studies with the properties traditionally attributed to Foeniculum vulgare Mill.
Method: A bibliographic and documentary review was carried out, where articles published on the subject were collected, retrieved from PubMed, Scielo and academic Google electronic databases. The DeCs-MeSH descriptors were used: medicinal herbs, medicinal plants, Foeniculum, clinical study and preclinical study.
Results: About 63% of the articles were from the last 10 years, preclinical pharmacological studies and phytochemicals predominated; It is worth mentioning the little existence of studies carried out in Cuba.
Fennel has a wide range of traditional uses and pharmacological actions, among the most recurrent in the literature we can mention the effects: antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antinociceptive, antipyretic, anxiolytic, antihypertensive, cytoprotective, antitumor, antioxidant, diuretic , antihirsutism, estrogenic, expectorant, galactogenic, as well as hepatoprotective, hypoglycemic, lipid-lowering and nootropic effect.
Conclusions: In general, there is agreement between the traditional properties and the research carried out to validate these uses. The best studied effects are antimicrobial and antioxidant. Clinical studies and those conducted in Cuba are scarce.
