Antibacterial activity of Oxandra longipetala R.E. Fr. (yaya morena) extracts against some bacteria of clinical interest

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Plant products represent an important source of secondary substances or metabolites in which a wide biological activity has been found (anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor, antimicrobial, among others). There are few works related to the antibacterial activity of plant extracts obtained from plants of the genus Oxandra. Of the species Oxandra longipetala there are no reports of antibacterial activity.
Objective: To evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of O. longipetala extracts against some bacteria of clinical interest.
Methods: Extracts of leaves and bark of O. longipetala were obtained by percolation. The antibacterial activity of aqueous extracts, dichloromethane and ethyl acetate, against the strains Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 43300, S. aureus ATCC 29213, S. aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, E. faecalis ATCC 700603 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 was evaluated by agar and microdilution diffusion methods.
Results: Inhibition of bacterial growth was evidenced with 3 of the 4 extracts used, with the aqueous extract and the ethyl acetate extract of bark presenting the greatest inhibitory effect against the bacteria under study.
Conclusions: The aqueous extracts, dichloromethane and ethyl acetate obtained from the leaves and bark of O. longipetala have a good antibacterial potential and constitute a basis for future studies aimed at the isolation, elucidation and characterization of the compounds responsible for this activity.
