ABSTRACT
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the name of a group of chronic and slowly progressive respiratory disorders characterized by reduced maximal expiratory flow during forced exhalation. COPD comprises emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The definition excludes other causes of chronic airflow obstruction such cystic fibrosis, bronchiolitis obliterans and bronchiectasis. Because of the imprecision of clinical findings, objective evaluation of the presence, severity and reversibility of airflow obstruction is essential in the diagnostic and evaluation of COPD.
