Concordance between body mass index and postoperative pain in patients under regional and general anesthesia

ABSTRACT
Obesity is a chronic multisystemic proinflammatory disorder associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality, with increased costs and resources in the health system. Patients with this pathology have an altered perception of pain, which is why they react differently to analgesics and postoperative pain, especially in the perioperative period. Therefore, we describe the relationship between postoperative pain and body mass index in patients under regional and general anesthesia in Hospital Angeles Mocel. The design of this study was observational, cross-sectional, descriptive, and retrospective, with a database carried out by anesthesiology residents at Hospital Angeles Mocel showing 240 adults who entered the operating room with some type of anesthesia from January 2022 to July 2023. We used a correlational finite population type. Patients identified as overweight in the immediate postoperative period presented a verbal analog scale (VAS) of 1 to 3 compared to those with average weight with a VAS of 0. Overweight patients at 24 hours continued with VAS 1-3 compared to patients with average weight who presented VAS of 0. Finally, there is not enough research evidence on postoperative pain in obese patients after surgical procedures, which is why this research is fundamental.
