ABSTRACT
The increased susceptibility of newborns, especially those born prematurely, to serious infections has been well documented. The incidence and severity of infections in the neonate is largely due to immaturity of both cellular and humoral immune function. Limited production and/or diminished functional capacity of all the cellular components of the immune system have been reported in the neonate. Moreover, quantitative and qualitative deficiencies of humoral components of the neonate’s immune system have been documented. In this review, we analyze the newborn’s immune system development.
