Analysis of symptoms related to emotional distress in the work environment during the pandemic. The case of a company in the city of Quito-Ecuador

ABSTRACT
Introduction: the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered alterations that affect the mental health of the population, cases of: anxiety, depression, stress and sleep disorders have been reported. The groups most affected by stress are first-line health personnel and workers in economic areas, in whom depression and anxiety greater than 30% were reported.
Objective: to evaluate patterns of present symptoms related to emotional distress in the work environment during the pandemic in workers of a company in the city of Quito.
Material and methods: observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study, which included 161 workers from a company in the city of Quito, during April to May 2020. The evaluation of present symptoms related to psychological distress was carried out using the Symptom Inventory SCL-90-R by L. Derogatis.
Results: 31.7% registered positive symptoms for phobic anxiety, 13.7% of the total interviewees were positive for somatizations, 13% registered anxiety symptoms. Significant differences were found in the global severity index (p = 0.02), as well as in the total of positive symptoms (p = 0.03) according to gender.
Conclusion: phobic anxiety and somatizations were the symptoms with the highest percentage found in the study population. As with similar investigations, significant differences were found in global severity score (GSI), total positive symptom score (TSP) and positive symptomatic distress score (PSSI) between male and female sex.
