ABSTRACT
Introduction: Sleep is a reversible psychophysiological process, characterized by a decrease in consciousness and reactivity to external stimuli. During sleep, fundamental processes for learning, such as memory consolidation, are carried out. In this sense, the literature points to the existence of a relationship between its quality and low academic achievement at the university level. However, most of the research carried out has been oriented to students in the health area. Objective: To study whether there is a similar relationship between sleep quality and academic performance in students of careers outside this field, by means of a descriptive and correlational design. Method: A sample of 125 students from 8 undergraduate courses of the Marist University was obtained during the period January-July 2023; by means of non-probabilistic sampling by type subjects. To evaluate sleep quality, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and an ad hoc questionnaire were used to collect sociodemographic data and academic average. Results: 80.80% of the students presented poor sleep quality, with a mean of 8.37. There was no correlation between the overall PSQI score and the academic average of the participants (r=-0.097, p=0.284). However, a relationship was found between academic performance and the "subjective quality” subscale (r=-0.18, p=0.049). Conclusions: The findings obtained, show that sleep quality is not related to academic performance in students outside of health careers.REFERENCES
