ABSTRACT
Introduction: status asthmaticus is characterized by being an episode of asthmatic crisis due to persistent inflammation, which has a poor response to standard treatment and is life-threatening. This disease, due to its pathophysiology, is time dependent on its timely recognition and early treatment.
Clinical cases: this paper describes two cases of female patients who required admission to the Intensive Care Unit, due to status asthmaticus refractory to conventional treatment, where volatile anesthetics (sevoflurane) administered through the inhaled sedation device with the AnaConDa (Anesthetic Conserving Device) were used, achieving adequate resolution of the bronchospasm due to the effect of these drugs on bronchial smooth muscle and inflammation.
Conclusion: the volatile anesthetic drugs administered through this device, favor bronchodilatation, improvement in airflow, resolution of hypercapnia without significantly affecting dead space, improving the efficiency of the response to bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory treatment, with a sparing effect on sedatives. Therefore, the management of inhaled anesthetics through the AnaConDa device is a useful alternative for managing asthmatic status.
