ABSTRACT
Introduction: adherence to the indicated hours of fasting in patients undergoing surgical anesthetic procedures is influenced by many factors.
Material and methods: a cross-sectional, observational and descriptive study was carried out with a convenience sample of 500 patients with the objective of knowing the adherence to the indications of preoperative fasting hours in pediatric patients who undergo an anesthetic procedure and its repercussions. ASA I, II and III patients, 0 to 18 years old, hospitalized for elective surgery with preoperative periods within normal limits with indications for preoperative fasting were included. Measures of central tendency were used for the demographic variables; Pearson's p was used for the correlation of variables.
Results: it was possible to observe that more than half of the patients (59.6% of the total sample) had more than 8 hours of preoperative fasting; of them only 68 (13.6%) presented hypoglycemia.
Conclusions: adherence to the indications of the hours of preoperative fasting was low (only 40% of the total study population had adequate fasting).
