ABSTRACT
Objective: To define the frequency of isolated infectious agents and associated
comorbidities in deep neck abscesses at a third level center.
Materials and Methods: An observational, retrospective, and descriptive study was conducted, reviewing
medical records of Hospital Español de México from 2017 to 2022. The results were compared with studies
conducted in 1990 and 2009.
Results: A total of 44 patients with complete records and microbiology reports were included. It was found that
the submandibular space was most frequently affected, and the most common comorbidity was type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Microbiology analysis revealed that
Staphylococcus epidermidis was the pathogen present in most patients.
Conclusions: Associated comorbidities, the odontogenic origin of the infection, and the involved spaces
have not changed over time; however, the microbiology is different, and this should be considered in the medical
management of these patients.
