ABSTRACT
Cardiac arrest is a critical medical condition with high expected morbidity and mortality. In a spaceflight cardiac arrest will result in the death of crewmember and has the potential to endager the whole mission. CPR guidelines from the American Heart Association (AHA) and the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) include a section on CPR in special circumstances, they do not address cardiac arrest management in microgravity. Several investigations have assessed CPR techniques in microgravity, the most of those studies concentrated on the application of chest compressions, and only few have investigated airway management in microgravity. The evidence for many others aspects of CPR such as defibrillation, drug therapy or post resuscitation care remains minimal Furthermore, the available studies were either performed in microgravity during parabolic flights, during simulated microgravity in a body suspension device or underwater. Nonetheless CPR in microgravity is feasible, however, it requires modifications of the terrestrial guidelines to consider the unique challenges of microgravity and long duration spaceflight. The aim of this paper is to present the advances in microgravity RCP techniques.
