ABSTRACT
Introduction: the prevalence of allergic rhinitis fluctuates between 10-40%, its frequency is increased by the presence of environmental factors.
Objective: to evaluate the prevalence of allergic rhinitis and examine possible risk factors in preschool and school population in four states of the Mexican Republic.
Material and methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted. The parents or guardians of participants completed two questionnaires, that explored demographics, allergic rhinitis symptoms, and possible risk factors.
Results: 4,348 surveys were conducted in population between the ages of 3-12. The overall prevalence of allergic rhinitis was 16.5%, with male predominance (52.1%). Risk factors identified were family history of atopy (RM = 2.9-20.6, p < 0.001), damp walls in the house (RM = 1.67-9, p < 0.05), and recurrent respiratory tract infections (RM = 6.7-8.05, p < 0.0001). Other non-generalized factors were, living in urban area, vehicular traffic and parent's educational level. Type of birth, bottle feeding and use of scented disinfectants were not associated with risk of allergic rhinitis.
Conclusions: the main risk factors for allergic rhinitis in preschool and school children were family history of allergy, recurrent respiratory infections and damp on walls.
