ABSTRACT
Introduction: in Mexico, the donation for family replacement predominates. Blood banks face difficulties in supplying blood and in guaranteeing the quality and safety of blood components. The experience of the altruistic donation (DA) model implemented at the Teleton Children's Hospital of Oncology is described.
Material and methods: retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive and observational study. Blood donors who attended in the Teleton Children's Hospital of Oncology from December 7, 2013 to June 30, 2023 were included; blood donors who abandoned the process were excluded. The frequency of regular donors and the frequency of seropositive donors were quantified. The use profile of the obtained products is described. Demographic data was obtained from the e-Delphyn
® electronic system, continues and categorical variables are described with measures of central tendency and proportions, respectively.
Results: of 17,689 predonors, 11,968 donors were suitable. 179 external collections were made. The frequency of positive serological makers was 0.08%. A total of 20,454 transfusions were performed: 11,258 (55%) platelet apheresis, 5,607 (27.5%) acked erythrocytes, 1,749 (8.4%) fresh plasma, 1,835 (8.9%) cryoprecipitates, 2 (0.009%) reconstituted whole blood and 0.014% (3) lymphocyte units.
Conclusions: transfusions are a fundamental support treatment in pediatric cancer patients.
