ABSTRACT
Introduction: delivering medical reports to the families of hospitalized patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is crucial for establishing a proper doctor-patient-family relationship, informed decision-making, and the mental health of the family members. This study implemented a standardized method of report delivery to enhance the quality of information.
Objective: to determine the utility in satisfaction levels and quality of care of a standardized methodology for delivering medical reports to families of hospitalized ICU patients.
Results: it was found that out of 90 studied family members, 27 of them (30%) had doubts with the usual medical report, compared to only 1 (2.4%) with the use of a standardized method (OR 0.02, 95% CI 0-0.16, p = 0.0001). Item 12 assessed the relationship with medical staff, reporting a significant difference in both groups; 90.2% in the intervention group knew the names of their doctors, compared to 55.1% in the non-intervened group (OR 7.4, 95% CI 2.2 to 32.8; p = 0.0003). Item 13 evaluated whether they were adequately informed about the clinical situation of their family member, finding that 97.6% in the intervened group reported feeling satisfied, versus 67.3% in the non-intervened group (OR 18.9, 95% CI 2.7 to 829.7; p = 0.0002). Item 14 assessed whether they understood the information provided at the time of their family member's admission to the ICU, with 95.2% in the intervened group reporting adequate comprehension compared to 67.3% in the non-intervened group (OR 9.2, 95% CI 1.9 to 88.9; p = 0.001). Lastly, Item 15 evaluated the clarity of the daily information provided in the medical report, finding that 97.6% in the intervened group considered it clear, compared to 53.1% in the non-intervened group (OR 0.03, 95% CI 0.0-0.2, p = 0.0001).
Conclusion: the implementation of a standardized methodology for delivering medical reports to families improves satisfaction and perception of the quality of medical care for relatives of patients admitted to the ICU.
