ABSTRACT
Background: Amiodarone is a commonly used drug with a long half-life that is
associated with asymptomatic hepatotoxicity; however, acute toxicity is rare, with few
reported cases of acute liver failure secondary to amiodarone, and in all these cases
the outcome was fatal during hospitalization.
Clinical cases: A 63-year-old male patient with uncontrolled atrial fibrillation who
developed fulminant hepatic failure within 24 hours after administration of IV amiodarone
at the recommended dose.
Conclusions: It is important that we as doctors are aware of this complication
that, although rare, is potentially fatal, so that in the event of any signs of liver failure
we withdraw the drug.
