ABSTRACT
Introduction: lipomas are benign neoplasms originating from adipose tissue and are considered relatively common in various anatomic regions. The common site for oral lipoma is the buccal mucosa, followed by the tongue, lips, floor of the mouth, vestibule, palate, gingiva and retromolar region.
Objective: to present a case of a male patient with histopathologic diagnosis of intraoral lipoma that was treated by surgical excision without recurrence or complications.
Clinical case: a 58-year-old male patient presented with an increase in volume on the floor of the mouth. The intraoral clinical examination revealed an increase of yellowish volume on the floor of the mouth, predominantly on the left side, circumscribed, depressible to palpation. An excisional biopsy of the lesion described above was performed, giving as histopathological diagnosis lipoma of the floor of the mouth.
Conclusion: intraoral lipomas are a rare entity, which can be noticed only during routine dental examinations. In the present case, this lesion on the floor of the mouth corresponds to one of the less frequently reported locations in the literature. The diagnosis of oral lipomas is usually clinical and surgical, but histopathology remains the gold standard.
