ABSTRACT
Introduction: the COVID-19 pandemic brought about changes in lifestyle, including sports activity. The increase in sedentary behavior had consequences for both the physical and mental health of the population.
Objective: to assess changes in physical activity among amateur athletes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Material and methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted, in which an online survey was administered to individuals who regularly engage in physical activity and are categorized as amateur athletes. Subjects over 18 years of age who provided informed consent and completed the survey were included. Demographic data and information related to physical activity, both before and after the onset of the COVID-19 quarantine, were collected.
Results: a total of 419 surveys were included, of which 67.3% were from males. Notably, those who engaged in physical activity more than three days a week experienced a 14% decrease in activity (p > 0.05). Outdoor physical activity decreased by 47.0%, compared to a 65.8% increase in physical activity performed indoors (p > 0.05). A total of 63 individuals (15.0%) had confirmed SARS-CoV-2 virus infection and only three (4.8%) of these required hospitalizations (intermediate or intensive care).
Conclusions: a significant decrease in the frequency of sports practice days was observed, along with a significant change in the training location during the COVID-19 pandemic. A high proportion of amateur athletes were not found to be engaged in recreational activities; however, some of them continued with outdoor sports.
