ABSTRACT
Introduction: Prevention of oral cancer involves a set of measures aiming at avoiding the appearance of this disease, and eliminating any possible state or precancerous lesion. Objective: To describe the preventive actions for oral cancer carried out by dentists at Mario Pozo Dental Clinic, Holguin, Cuba, in the period from January to June, 2019.
Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was carried out in patients who were referred by the oral cancer early detection program (OCEDP); the universe was constituted by all the patients who were referred in the period previously mentioned; by means of a nonprobabilistic sampling the sample was composed by 57 patients. They were distributed by age, sex and causative entities, then the presumptive, definitive and effective diagnosis were determined.
Results: Female sex was the most affected one with 64.9% of the cases, the age group with the higher number of referred patients was 60 to 79 years old with 50.9%. Leukoplakia represented 43.9 % of the reasons for referral, followed by nevus with 21.1% and fibroma with 14.0%. Cases with malignant lesions were not referred and there was an effective diagnosis in 70.2% of the cases.
Conclusion: Patients referred by the OCEDP in the population studied were mostly elderly people and women. The main causative entities of the referrals to a second level of attention have a traumatic etiology. There is an effective diagnosis in most of the cases.
