Educational Intervention on periodontal disease for pregnant women

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Periodontal disease is observed in approximately 50% of pregnant women; there is insufficient knowledge about its clinical characteristics and prevention.
Objective: To assess the effectiveness of an educational intervention on periodontal disease for pregnant women admitted to a hospital.
Method: A comparative quasi-experimental study from January to March 2019, in 34 pregnant women admitted to ¨8 de Marzo¨ Maternity Provincial Hospital from the municipality and province of Holguín, Cuba. At the stage of diagnosis, learning needs were determined by surveys. Then, 4 educational sessions were carried out in which the following topics were addressed: clinical signs, risk factors and preventive actions of periodontopathies, as well as the relation between pregnancy and periodontal disease; finally, the evaluation was done under the same criteria as in the diagnostic stage. The results were compared with Mc Nemar test in IBM SPSS Statistics 24 and significance level of 5%.
Results: Significant differences were obtained between the initial and final state of knowledge: adequate knowledge about clinical signs (diagnosis 41.2%, evaluation 97.1%), adequate knowledge about risk factors (diagnosis 23.5%, evaluation 79.4%), adequate knowledge about preventive actions (diagnosis 55.9%, evaluation 85.3%), identification of the relation between periodontopathies and pregnancy (diagnosis 52.9%, evaluation 91.2%) and substantiation of the answer (diagnosis 8.8%, evaluation 70.6%).
Conclusions: The educational intervention allowed motivating pregnant women and increasing their knowledge about periodontal disease. Further educational work should be carried out to improve the health education of pregnant women in relation to periodontal disease prevention.
