ABSTRACT
Introduction: The World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that 50 percent of the drugs are sold, prescribed, dispensed or consumed in an inappropriate way. Facing this situation implies knowing the magnitude of the problem, identifying the determinant factors, as well as designing and assessing interventions to improve it.Objective: To characterize the behavior of medicine intake in the population with chronic diseases.
Methods: A descriptive investigation on medicine intake was carried out in 450 patients with chronic diseases belonging to seven doctor´s offices from the urban health area of Julio Grave de Peralta in Holguín municipality during the period from March, 2017 to April, 2018. An interview guide prepared by the researchers with prior informed consent was applied.
Results: The excessive prescription of medications prevailed, which exceeds the five drugs prescribed by the doctor in an important group of patients and increases according to age groups. Among the chronic diseases with the highest medicine intake, hypertension (53.84%), osteomyoarticular diseases (20.30%) and diabetes mellitus (17.30%) prevailed; there is a tendency to self-medication in 72.88% of the cases, which mainly used complacency to obtain prescriptions for their drugs.
Conclusions: Medicine intake is related to the current demographic situation, which shows the tendency to polypharmacy, prolonged use of drugs, and excessive self-medication.
