ABSTRACT
Introduction: Cancer is a real problem for universal health. The most common tumor in Latin American and Caribbean women is breast cancer. In young women, this disease is more aggressive due to the biological characteristics of the tumor and the delay in diagnosis. Mammography is the ideal method for early diagnosis. Objective: To evaluate the sonographic, mammographic and histopathological concordance of breast cancer in young women.
Methods: A descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective study was carried out in the Imaging Service at Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Surgical Hospital from January 2014 to December 2018. All the medical records of women under 40 years of age with diagnosis of breasts cancer, which were cared for in the referred center in the established period.
Results: 54.5% of the women were between 36 and 40 years old. 91.3% of the sample had hypoechoic nodules by ultrasound, and 56.5% of these were smaller than 2 cm. 61.1% of the nodular lesions were irregular on mammography and 55.5% with spiculated margins. 76.5% and 86.5% of infiltrating ductal carcinomas were interpreted as highly suggestive of malignancy or BI-RADS 5 by ultrasound and mammography, respectively. In 52.4% of the lesions, calcifications were observed and 71.8% of these were highly suspected of malignancy.
Conclusions: There is a relationship between imaging and pathological diagnosis in breast lesions with suspected malignancy.
