ABSTRACT
Background: Hypothyroidism is characterized by a deficiency of thyroid hormone,
its prevalence varies from 0 to 7% in the United States and from 3 to 5% in Europe.
Acute colonic pseudo-obstruction is generally associated to hospitalized patients,
with an approximate incidence of 100 cases for every 100,000 hospital admissions.
Its pathophysiology is multifactorial, highlighting an imbalance in the autonomic
innervation of the colon, systemic alterations such as sepsis and hydroelectrolytic
imbalance.
Clinical case: A 79-year-old female patient in who an infrequent association was
diagnosed: hypothyroidism with Ogilivie’s syndrome.
Conclusions: Although rare, the association of hypothyroidism and Ogilvie’s
syndrome should be considered in patients who show colonic dilatation in the postoperative
period.
