ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the correlation between serum calcium levels and the BISAP
severity scale in the emergency department.
Materials and Methods: An observational, analytical study was done with
records of patients with acute pancreatitis in the emergency department of a general
hospital from January to December 2019. The correlation formula was used
to calculate the sample size. The sampling technique was non-probabilistic by
quota. Calcium and BISAP were measured at admission and at 48 hours, calcium
on a continuous and BISAP on a discrete scale. Pearson correlation, regression and
projections were made.
Results: There were included 90 patients. At admission, the correlation (-0.405)
between BISAP (discrete scale) and serum calcium (continuous scale) was statistically
significant (p = 0.000); the patient with BISAP 0 had calcium of 8.685 mg/dL and with
BISAP 5 had serum calcium of 7.490 mg/dL. At 48 hours of admission, the correlation
(-0.732) between BISAP and serum calcium was significant (p = 0.000), more intense
and maintained the inversely proportional relationship.
Conclusions: The correlation between serum calcium and BISAPS is high and
inversely proportional in acute pancreatitis.
