ABSTRACT
Hypernatremic dehydration is a frequent abnormality in newborns and if it is treated adequately and in a timely manner, since if it is not reversed it can interfere with the quality of life, causing neurological alterations and sequelae in the short, medium and long term. In the neonatal stage, the most frequent cause of dehydration is insufficient fluid intake and there are multiple factors associated with hypernatremic dehydration in the neonatal stage. In the correction of hypernatremic dehydration, there are many factors that can hinder an adequate decrease in sodium levels. We review the most important aspects of hypernatremic dehydration including etiology, physiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, and complications.
