ABSTRACT
Squamous cell carcinoma associated to breast implants has attracted attention due its aggressiveness; although, the most recent reports show little more than a dozen cases worldwide. We present a systematic review of the literature of squamous cell carcinoma associated to breast implants. We performed a systematic review without language limits, using the terms: "breast implant", "breast capsule", "mammaplasty", "breast augmentation" and "squamous cell carcinoma". We included 15 articles with a total of 18 patients (17 women and 1 man); with an average age of 57 years (range 40 to 81 years); average time of 19 years (range 4 to 40 years) between the placement of the implant and the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. The type of implants was heterogeneous. The symptoms became evident with enlargement (15 patients, 83.3%) and pain (13 patients, 72.2%). Treatment of the patients was predominantly surgical. We concluded that squamous cell carcinoma is a rare but highly aggressive tumor, whose etiology is not entirely clear. In the systematic review with the largest number of patients identified so far, we confirmed that the classic presentation is the development of late seroma with pain in patients who have had implants for a prolonged time. The disease does not appear to be limited to a single gender or anatomic site. Further studies and creation of records are needed to classify the risk factors of the disease, its treatment, and clinical outcomes better.
