Synthesis of new evidence on risk factors, pathogenesis, and management of perinatal asphyxia

ABSTRACT
Neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy is one of the leading causes of perinatal death and neurologic disability worldwide. Even in the last decade, the incidence of this serious health problem has not been reduced, including developed countries; without significant progress in developing countries. It is important to understand the associated risk factors to identify vulnerable groups and improve perinatal care. A greater number of cases and the reduction of sequelae could be avoided when suspected in patients at risk, early diagnosis and early treatment. In addition, recent general recommendations are provided for an effective induction of therapeutic hypothermia, the only valid therapy for these patients.REFERENCES
