ABSTRACT
Orthognathic surgery aligns the patient's jaws in the desired and most appropriate position. However, the procedure may leave other aesthetic problems unresolved or cause undesirable aesthetic changes that persist months or years after surgery. Aesthetic results in orthognathic surgery are one of the main objectives of patients, orthodontists and surgeons. Correction of maxillomandibular bone deformity generally restores the functions of the stomatognathic system and facial aesthetics. However, symmetry and desired soft tissue projection are not always achieved with bone movement alone. The most popular soft tissue filler is hyaluronic acid (HA). Natural HA is composed of repeating disaccharide units of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and D-glucuronate. HA is a natural component of the extracellular matrix with a high turnover rate. It is rapidly degraded by hyaluronidase with a half-life of about 12 hours. Therefore, HA products are stabilized by crosslinking agents. Generally, the filling effects can last for six to nine months. The purpose of this case report is to report the application of hyaluronic acid in a patient after orthognathic surgery.
