ABSTRACT
The pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome has been recognized as an emerging
condition; a new spectrum of pediatric disease associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection.
This syndrome was initially identified in Europe and was named PIMS-TS (Pediatric
Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome - Temporally associated with SAR-CoV-2) subsequent
in the United States of America was designated MIS-C (Multisystem Inflammatory
Syndrome in Children), when in May 2020, the WHO coined the term. The incidence of
MIS-C in patients younger than 21 years infected with SARS-CoV-2 is 5.1 per 1,000,000
person-months [95% CI 4.5 to 5-8] and is higher in African American and Hispanic
or Latinos versus Caucasians. In this article, we summarize the main findings of this
syndrome in terms of epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and pathophysiology.
Finally, we will present information about whether MIS-C belongs to the spectrum of
Kawasaki disease.
