ABSTRACT
Mucormycosis is an opportunistic and angioinvasive fungal infection caused by mucoral fungi, infection can be
acute or chronic.
Clinical case. A 47-year-old male patient with a history of type 2 diabetes with poor treatment adherence. He had
localized stabbing pain in the nasal region, accompanied by fever, nasal congestion and frontal headache of one
month of evolution. A biopsy of the nasal septum with hematoxylin-eosin was performed and necrotic bone tissue
was reported with the presence of non-septate branching hyphae at 90° angles compatible with mucormycosis. In
culture was growth for
Rhizomucor spp.
Conclusions. Isolated chronic mucormycosis in the nasal sinuses is rare, so in cases of persistent nasal congestion
or facial/ocular pain associated with risk factors and without a clear cause, mucormycosis should be investigated.
