Thrombocytopenia in pregnancy: an overview on causes, implications and patient management

ABSTRACT

Thrombocytopenia is a decrease in the blood platelet count below 150,000 per μL. This can have an immunological or infectious origin predominantly. However, it can also be associated with pregnancy. There are different spectra of thrombocytopenia, distinguish the gestational, which is responsible for up to 80% of the cases present in pregnant women, being triggers at this stage also hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, HELLP syndrome and acute fatty liver of pregnancy. On the other hand, thrombocytopenia independent of pregnancy hoard for up to 20% of cases, highlighting that, despite not being related to pregnancy, any of the pathologies corresponding to this classification can be triggered or exacerbated during pregnancy. A differential and personalized diagnosis is essential for an adequate treatment, as well as for a timely choice of the route of birth and management of both the patient and the newborn.
