Training on prevention of low birth weight for nursing professionals

ABSTRACT
Background: nursing as a profession offers postgraduate programs with encouraging results in order to contribute to continuous training applying advanced practices according to needs and services.Objective: to design a postgraduate course aimed at nursing professionals on the prevention of low birth weight in pregnant women.
Methods: a descriptive investigation was carried out at the "Luis A. Turcios Lima" University Polyclinic in Pinar del Río in the first semester of 2020. Methods of the theoretical level were used for their theoretical foundation and information gathering, empirical ones: documentary analysis, Questionnaire for professionals and application of educational techniques, in addition to the criteria of specialists for the evaluation of the designed product.
Results: the identification of learning needs in the selected professionals identified a deficit of knowledge in the subject, therefore, a course was designed aimed at nurses at the primary level of health care, based on the prevention of low birth weight that includes content on the particularities of care for pregnant women with this risk factor, care performance in the preventive process and humanistic-clinical integration in the performance of these professionals.
Conclusions: the objectives and contents of the designed training course were based on achieving a higher performance of the nursing professionals regarding the problems encountered. It was assessed as adequate for its application according to the criteria of the specialists consulted.
