ABSTRACT
Objective: To report our experience at 32 kilometer station with runners who suffered muscular cramps during Independence Marathon from Leon, Gto. on September 2006.
Material and methods: All athletes with muscular cramps who required help by muscular cramps, inquiring for pain zone, hydration and cognitive status evaluation and stance time.
Intervention: 100 mL of liquid for hydration, decubitus supine position at shadow zone and passive stretching of affected muscle until the pain disappeared.
Results: 112 marathon runners ( 9.3%) with mean age and SD 32 ± 7 years (range 18-66); 4.5% were women (n = 5) and 95.5% were male ( n=107); the pain zones corresponded to: gastrocnemius 66% (n =74); isquiotibiales 19.5% (n = 22); quadriceps 13.4% (n =15); there was not statistical difference between right and left sides, the stance time of attention presented a mean of 4 minutes (range 3-7); 110 athletes continued in the race; 2 runners left the competition, and 2 more required medical service and they were send to hospital.
Conclusions: The runners with cramps require immediately medical evaluation and passive stretching of affected muscle.
