ABSTRACT
Body dysmorphic disorder is characterized by persistent preoccupation with an imagined defect in physical appearance that causes significant clinical distress or interferes with important areas of daily activity. The exact cause of this disease is unknown; however, it is believed that this pathology arises from the interaction of psychological, biological, social and cultural factors that impact the behavior of the individual. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in its fifth edition, the diagnosis is clinical and must be early to have a more favorable prognosis. Initial management is based on psychotherapy, with cognitive behavioral Actualización therapy being the first choice. Drug treatment includes serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Approximately half of the patients with this disease have unnecessary medical interventions that will not be able to solve their concern, causing medical-legal problems for the treating physicians.REFERENCES
