Psychoeducational intervention strategy for relatives of infants with autism spectrum disorders

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Autism spectrum disorders in childhood have repercussions in the school, social, family and personal environment, due to the implications of the manifest deficit in interaction and social communication with the presence of repetitive and restricted.Objective: Apply a psychoeducational intervention strategy to relatives of infants with autism spectrum disorders.
Methods: A quasi-experimental study without a control group was carried out on 16 relatives of infants with autism spectrum disorders at the International Center for Neurological Restoration, from January/2018 to December/2010. An anonymous questionnaire was applied. For data analysis, the observed frequency and percentage calculation were used.
Results: In the sample, the female sex prevails (75%), age range from 30 to 39 years (43.8%) and high school level (56.3%). Before the psychoeducational intervention was applied, the level of knowledge of the relatives about the autism spectrum disorder was insufficient in the 81.2%, high emotional expression at 87.5% and 12.5% complies the indicated treatment. After the intervention, the level of knowledge of the relatives was 93.8%, 100% presented low emotional expression and complied the indicated treatment.
Conclusions: The psychoeducational intervention applied to relatives of infants with autism spectrum disorders improved their level of knowledge, favored emotional expression and compliance with the indicated treatment, so it can be considered a positive therapeutic alternative.
