ABSTRACT
Objective: To analyze the sociodemographic and clinical profile of patients with
syphilis in the central nervous system in HIV co-infection.
Materials and Methods: A descriptive, observational and retrospective study was
carried out at the University Hospital of Santander, in which patients diagnosed with
HIV were included who had neurosyphilis confirmed by the study of cerebrospinal fluid.
The inclusion criteria were age over 18 years as well as having performed cerebrospinal
fluid studies and/or central nervous system imaging studies. The main measurements of
the study were days of hospital stay, time since diagnosis of HIV, viral load, neurological
symptoms and characteristics of the cerebrospinal fluid.
Resultados: All patients were in stage C of HIV, the CD4 count was below 200 CD4
in 6/9 patients. Headache, alterations in the state of consciousness, fever, meningeal
symptoms with 4/9, and language alteration in 3/9 predominated as main symptoms.
Conclusions: Although it is necessary to expand the sample to obtain greater
statistical power, this article allowed the beginning of the construction of the behavior
of neurosyphilis in patients with HIV.
