ABSTRACT
Background. Some surface antigens of different Gram-negative bacteria have some influence on the virulence of such cells and their susceptibility or resistance to the bactericidal effect of normal human serum (NHS).
Objective. To purify and characterize by electrophoresis (PAGE) the outer membranes proteins (OMP) from a normal human serum susceptible strain and another resistant one of
Klebsiella pneumoniae and determine the influence of these OMP on the bactericidal effect of the NHS.
Material and methods. Bacterial OMPs were purified and electrophoretically characterized and their protective activity on bactericidal effect of NHS were determined.
Results. The OMP of both strains reached a high grade of purity, their electropherograms demonstrated that the OMP obtained from both bacterial strains had a chemical composition and electrophoretic distribution essentially identical. The purified OMP did not show any inhibitory effect on serum bactericidal activity.
Conclusions. Despite the serum susceptibility or resistance the strains studied showed a high degree of similarity.
