ABSTRACT
Objective. To determine the influence of continuous education over the incidence and transcendence of nosocomial infections.
Material and methods. A cross sectional study was made to determine knowledge about nosocomial infections on members in a terciary care hospital. Incidence, distribution of hospitalary infections and their costs were simultaneously obtained through a follow up of all patients hospitalized in a two months period. After this evaluation, a nine months educative program was planned and developed. Incidence, distribution and hospitalary infections costs were obtained again. The nosocomial infections rates, confidence intervals and differences through χ
2 and Z were analyzed.
Results. Before the educative program was developed, the nosocomial infection rate was 9.11. The bed occupancy due to hospitalary infections was 2,622 days and the cost was $104,020 US dollars. After the educational program, the rate of hospitalary infection diminished to 3.7, as well as bed occupancy (596 days) and costs ($16,880 US dollars). Soft tissue infections and urinary tract infections were the most common.
Conclusions. Incidence and transcendence of nosocomial infections were influenced in a great way by the educational program.
