ABSTRACT
Introduction. Diabetes is one of the chronic metabolic diseases with the
highest prevalence, with a high population and hospitalization impact, and with a
tendency to double in the coming years. Characterized by multiple complications
that decrease the quality of life when there is no proper management. In recent
years, it has been shown that only drug therapy does not guarantee good control,
therefore, it requires a comprehensive intervention to the multiple shortcomings
that includes adequate patient education about their disease and self-care,
among other factors. The objective of this study was to determine which factors
are related to the lack of education in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
mellitus.
Methodology. An exhaustive literature search was carried out in PubMed,
ScienceDirect, SciELO, Clinical Key, Primary Care Diabetes Europe (PCDE), statistics
from WHO, and guidelines from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). A
total of 50 articles that met the inclusion criteria were selected.
Results. Multiple
factors that determine learning and self-care were found, among them, available
time for consultation, doctor-patient relationship, inaccessibility to health centers,
economic aspects, and the importance of personal, family and social commitment.
Conclusion. The commitment to the educational process and the structuring of a
comprehensive management of patients with diabetes mellitus are essential to reduce
the impact of complications and their chronicity, as well as to mitigate the
disproportionate costs that arise from the need of patient care.
