ABSTRACT
Introduction: The knowledge of aspects that distinguish learning styles in residents of the basic sciences, allows recognizing their main strengths and limitations, which tributes to the possibility of making an influence in its modification or consolidation. The characterization of these styles proves to be feasible by means of the application of Honey-Alonso's questionnaire, that classifies them as active, reflexive, theoretical and pragmatical. Objective: To characterize the learning styles in first-year residents of basic sciences in Mariana Grajales Coello Medical School of Holguín, Cuba.
Method: An investigation was carried out with a quantitative, qualitative, cross-sectional approach. The sample was constituted by 27 first-year residents of basic sciences that initiated the specialty during the 2017-2018 academic year. The statistical analysis of the results was used, the score was calculated for each style, as well as the mean, and the variance analysis was made.
Results: The learning styles in the residents of basic sciences evidenced a preference for the theoretic reflexive combination. The items in favor of the reasoning based in theories and the ones that tend to prevision and prudence were selected with higher scores and respective way.
Conclusions: The preferable learning styles in residents of basic sciences were the reflexive and the theoretical ones, with predominance of the first. The highest preference ranking in all cases was the moderate. The variance analysis showed significant differences between the four styles, except between the active style and the pragmatic one.
