ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the marker, width of erythrocyte distribution (RDW-CV) in patients with sepsis hospitalized in the Intensive
Care Unit of the Civil Hospital of Culiacán.
Methodology: Comparative longitudinal observational descriptive study. We included
patients with sepsis over 18 years of age hospitalized in the intensive care unit, in the period between January 2016 and Sep tember
2017, at the Hospital Civil de Culiacán.
Results: The average age was 53 years. 16 patients were female and 13 male patients.
The days of stay in the intensive care unit were between 3 to 25 days. The outcome of the patients was discharge due to impro vement
or death, where 51.7% of the patients withdrew due to improvement. Mortality analysis was performed, correlating RDW-CV on admission
and discharge, with the mortality calculated by APACHE II, this relationship was statistically significant (p = 0.016, CI 0.175-
.878).
Conclusions: The results of this study show that the elevation of the RDW-CV upon admission to the ICU is directly related
to the clinical status and evolution of patients hospitalized in intensive care.
