Score regions of nucleolar organizers NORs in the epithelial lesions of buccal cavity

ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate NORs’ number in: common wart, frictional keratosis, epithelial dysplasia, lichen planus, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma.
Methods: 68 cases were histopathologically analyzed by hematoxylin and eosin technique and the AgNOR technique described by Ploton, using silver nitrate.
Results: NOR
s average was: common wart 9 ± 2.24, frictional keratosis 5.5 ± 1.16, epithelial dysplasia 8 ± 2.12, lichen planus 6.8 ± 2.13, squamous cell carcinoma 6.96 ± 0.53 and basal cell carcinoma 3.55 ± 0.25. There was a relation between AgNOR
s’ number and dysplasia r
s = 0.9, with a reliable level of p = 0.05. The relation between the average of nucleolar organizers in lichen planus and in squamous cell carcinoma was r
s = 0.99 with a reliable level of p = 0.1. Between basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, the relation was r
s = 1.35 with a reliable level of p = 0.05.
Conclusions: The grade of basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas’ malignity and the number of nucleolar organizers are positively related, meaning that as organizers’ number increases, malignity grade does.
